NBA sports betting

If you think of basketball, you might automatically think of the NBA (National Basketball Association) from the USA, with top stars like Dirk Nowitzki, LeBron James, Michael Jordan and Co. or teams like the Chicago Bulls or the LA Lakers. Not without reason, the NBA is by far one of the strongest and most popular basketball leagues in the world. Therefore, NBA sports betting is also becoming more and more popular. Together with the NHL, the MLB and the NFL, it belongs to the four most popular couches in the USA, the so-called “Big 4”. Founded in 1946, the NBA currently consists of 30 teams (franchises). Except for the Toronto Raptors team, which is based in Canada, the remaining 29 teams come from the USA. On average, just under 18000 spectators attend a basketball game. The current title holders are the Golden State Warriors.

Distribution of the teams

As already mentioned, 30 teams play in the NBA. In the NHL, the table is divided into two so-called Conferences, each of which contains three divisions.  The distribution of teams in the fight for the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy is as follows:

Western Conference (15 Teams)

Northwest Division Pacific Division Southwest Division
Denver Nuggets Golden State Warriors (aktueller Titelträger) Dallas Mavericks
Minnesota Timberwolves Los Angeles Clippers Houston Rockets
Oklahoma City Thunder Los Angeles Lakers Memphis Grizzlies
Portland Trail Blazers Phoenix Suns New Orleans Pelicans
Utah Jazz Sacramento Kings San Antonio Spurs

Eastern Conference (15 Teams)

Atlantic Division Central Division Southeast Division
Boston Celtics Chicago Bulls Atlanta Hawks
Brooklyn Nets Cleveland Cavaliers Charlotte Hornets
New York Knicks Detroit Pistons Miami Heat
Philadelphia 76ers Indiana Pacers Orlando Magic
Toronto Raptors Milwaukee Bucks Washington Wizards

How it is played

A season is played in two parts, the Regular Season and the Play-Offs, in which the season winner is determined and with the winner’s trophy, the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy. The current title holder of the 2017/18 season is the Golden State Warriors team.
In the regular season, each team plays 82 games, which in the end means an incredible 1230 games in the regular season alone. In the play-offs, the winner is determined according to the “best-of-seven” mode (whoever has four wins first), in knockout mode. The winners of each of the six divisions and the five best teams from each conference play against each other. In total, these are 16 teams that fight in the playoffs for the championship. With NBA sports betting, you can bet on the winner of a game, among other things.

Playing field

Unlike football or ice hockey, basketball is not about scoring goals, but scoring baskets. To do this, two teams compete against each other and try to throw a ball weighing 625 grams into the opponent’s basket. The baskets are 3.05 meters above the ground and have a ring with a net and a diameter of 46cm. The court, which is relatively small, has a width of 15.24 meters and a length of 28.65 meters. Since basketball in the NBA is played in a hall, the ceiling above the basketball court must have a height of at least 7 meters. Because of the small playing area, basketball involves a lot of fast action and high scores, which makes watching a basketball game immensely fun and exciting.
Similar to most team sports, basketball has many different lines, which are generally five centimeters wide, on the court. The court itself is divided by the center line. In addition, there is the 3-point line, with a distance of 7.24 meters from the basket, or the free-throw line, with a distance of 4.60 meters from the basket. The center circle is used at the beginning of the game quarters for the jump ball (kick-off).

During the game – game procedure

At the beginning of a game, 5 players of each team, the so-called Starting Five, are on the court. In total, a team may consist of a maximum of 15 players, of which 12 may be used per game. During a match, players may be substituted at any time and as often as necessary in the event of a stoppage in play. In addition, each team has 7 possible time-outs per game. One time-out is 75 seconds. In the last three minutes of the game, each team may only take two time-outs. The game is played in quarters of 12 minutes each, which corresponds to a total playing time of 48 minutes. After 2 quarters there is a break of 20 minutes, with another break of 2 minutes between each quarter. As in ice hockey, if there is an interruption, the time is stopped and only resumed after the game is restarted.
If there is a tie after the regular playing time, there is an overtime of 5 minutes. This overtime is repeated until one team is determined as the winner. In NBA sports betting, the overtime is usually calculated into the betting event.

Since there are always different situations and interruptions during the game, just the one who now wants to bet on games from the NBA, should still familiarize themselves with some things like rules and terms. This includes, for example, the shot clock with its 24 seconds rule. Thereby 24 seconds run on the shot clock per attack. This means that an attack can last a maximum of 24 seconds and counts from the time the ball is thrown in and restarts when the ring at the basket is touched, when there is a change of possession, a foot play or a foul. When it comes to time, there is more than one in basketball, such as the 24 second rule just mentioned. There is also the 8 second rule to get the ball out of your own half of the court and into your opponent’s half, or the 3 second rule where a defender is allowed to be in the opponent’s zone. Ball possession is not a factor. However, this rule is considered a very generous rule by the referees. Lastly, there is the 5 seconds rule, where a player is allowed to hold the ball during a throw-in. The player must start dribbling, passing the ball or taking a basket shot after 5 seconds. If there is a violation, of any of these time rules, the opposing team gets a throw-in.
As in any sport, there are some rules in basketball. Like the aforementioned time rules, there are some other important ones, such as the step fault. If a player, in possession of the ball, stops dribbling, he may only have two contacts with the ground. After that, the ball must be passed or thrown to the basket. Otherwise, this is a step fault and will be penalized with a throw-in for the opponent. There is also a throw-in for the opponent if an attacker, after having taken up a dribble, takes up another dribble, the so-called double dribble.
Unlike in football, for example, the team in possession of the ball may not play the ball back from the opponent’s half into its own half during an attack. This would be an illegal return and is also decided with a throw-in for the opponent.
The last important rule to consider is the foot game. In basketball, you are not allowed to touch the ball with your foot, knee or leg. If there is a foot play, however, when a defensive player commits it, the throw clock is set to 14 seconds if more than 10 seconds have elapsed. If an offensive player commits a foot play, the throw clock is set to the full 24 seconds and the opposing team gets the ball.

Last but not least, there is scoring to consider. Because in basketball there are three different ways to score. A normal throw that results in a hit is scored 2 points. For a hit behind the 7.24 meter 3-point line to the basket, there are 3 points, whereas for a free throw there is only one point.

NHL Sports Betting

Ice hockey – a sport that is becoming more and more popular in Germany, which not only provides welded-in betting experts with fun, excitement and action, but now also spills over to amateur tipsters and finds popularity. Who has bet in former times classically mainly almost exclusively on football, ventures today gladly also times a view on ice hockey. Here, the NHL (National Hockey League) from North America stands out in particular.
The NHL is considered the strongest and most popular league in the world. Together with the NBA, the MLB and the NFL the NHL belongs in the USA to the four most popular couches of the long, the so-called “Big 4”. The NHL was founded in 1917 and currently consists of 31 teams (franchises). Of these, 24 teams from the USA and 7 teams from Canada make up the league.

Distribution of the teams

As already mentioned, 31 teams play in the NHL. As everyone should know, the USA is a very large country and with the participation of some Canadian teams, this area becomes a bit larger. Therefore, in the NHL the table is divided into two so-called Conferences, each of which contains two divisions.  The distribution of the teams in the fight for the Stanley Cup is as follows:

Western Conference (15 Teams)

Central Division Pacific Division
Chicago Blackhawks Anaheim Ducks
Colorado Avalanche Calgary Flames
Dallas Stars Edmonton Oilers
Minnesota Wild Los Angeles Kings
Nashville Predators Arizona Coyotes
St. Louis Blues San Jose Sharks
Winnipeg Jets Vancouver Canucks
Vegas Golden Knights

Eastern Conference (16 Teams)

Atlantic Division Metropolitan Division
Boston Bruins Carolina Hurricanes
Buffalo Sabres Columbus Blue Jackets
Detroit Red Wings New Jersey Devils
Florida Panthers New York Islanders
Canadiens de Montréal New York Rangers
Ottawa Senators Philadelphia Flyers
Tampa Bay Lightning Pittsburgh Penguins
Toronto Maple Leafs Washington Capitals (aktueller Titelträger)

How it’s played

A season is played in two parts, the regular season and the play-offs, in which the season winner is determined and crowned with the winner’s trophy, the Stanley Cup. The current title holder of the 2017/18 season is the Washington Capitals.
In the regular season, each team plays 82 games, which in the end means an incredible 1271 games in the regular season alone. In the play-offs, the winner is determined according to the “best-of-seven” mode (whoever has four wins first), in knockout mode. The best three teams from each of the four divisions, as well as two teams from each conference that receive a so-called wild card and follow the already qualified teams in the points standings, play against each other. In total, there are 16 teams fighting for the championship in the play-offs.

Playing field

As in football, ice hockey is about scoring goals. For this purpose, two teams compete against each other and try to shoot a hard rubber disc weighing about 150 grams, the so-called puck, with the stick into the goal of the opponent. Compared to soccer or other sports, the goals in ice hockey are relatively small. Where a football goal has a width of 7.32 meters and a height of 2.44 meters, the width of an ice hockey goal is only 1.83 meters and has a height of just 1.22 meters.
As everyone should be aware, ice hockey is played on an ice surface. This has a size of 200 to 85 feet, which corresponds to a length of 60.96 meters and a width of 25.91 meters. Due to the small playing surface, ice hockey usually always results in a fast and aggressive game, which makes watching an ice hockey game immensely fun and exciting.
On the ice surface there are many different colored dots and lines. The playing field itself is divided into thirds by two blue lines, the two end zones (defense zone and attack zone), and the neutral zone in the middle. The goals are marked with red lines, with the goal area marked with a light blue area and a red semicircle. Unlike in soccer, handball and co, in ice hockey it is allowed to continue playing even in the red goal line. Since, as already mentioned, the goals and the puck are relatively small, lights flash behind the goal after each hit, so that even the last of the usually 17,000 or so stadium visitors notices that a goal has been scored.
Last but not least, there are the various face-off points. These are red dots, some with circles. After an interruption, this is where the puck is put back into play.

During the game – game procedure

At the beginning of a game, 6 players of each team, consisting of 5 field players and a goalkeeper, are on the ice. The special feature is that in exceptional situations, especially when the game is drawing to a close and a team is trailing, the goalkeeper may be replaced by an additional field player. A team may consist of a maximum of 22 players (20 field players, 2 goalkeepers).
The game is played in thirds of 20 minutes each, which corresponds to a total playing time of 60 minutes. Between each third there is a break of 15 minutes. As in basketball, time is stopped in the event of an interruption and resumed only after the game has been restarted at one of the starting points.
If there is a tie after the regular playing time, there is a sudden-death overtime of 5 minutes. Some of you may know this from earlier cup competitions in football. Here, before the introduction of normal overtime and possible penalty shootout, there was a golden goal overtime. This means, both earlier in football, as well as today in ice hockey nothing else than that as soon as one of the two teams scores a goal, the game is immediately over. In overtime, there are only 4 players on the ice.
If the game is still tied in overtime, there is a penalty shootout, similar to a soccer penalty shootout, in which three shooters from each team are given the opportunity to score a goal.

Since there are always different situations and interruptions during the game, especially the one who now wants to bet on games from the NHL, should still familiarize themselves with some things like rules and terms. This includes, for example, the power play (PP). This is an overnumber situation of a team, triggered by an irregular action of the opposing team, as a result of a time penalty of at least 2 minutes. The time penalty can only be cancelled early by a goal scored by the team in the overtime situation.
In ice hockey, there are situations when (usually during interruptions) all five field players suddenly leave the field at once and are replaced by five new field players. This is also called a line change and may be done as often as desired. Another special feature is the so-called Empty-Net, which means nothing else than “empty goal”. For this, the goalkeeper is replaced by a field player, usually only in the last minutes of the game and usually only when the team is behind. This has the background that the trailing team tries to get into an overnumber situation by an additional field player and thus to still achieve the equalizer or connecting goal. A goal scored by an unoccupied goalkeeper is called an Empty Net Goal. Each team is allowed one time-out (time-out) of 30 seconds per game to make the changes.
As in any sport, there are some rules in ice hockey. Like the aforementioned power play, there are some other important ones, such as the face-off or also called a bully. A face-off is nothing more than a kick-off or throw-in in football. After a stoppage, the referee puts the puck back into play at one of the red face-off spots. A player from each team tries to win the puck for his team. There is also the offside (offside). In offside, at least one player of the attacking team has crossed the blue line between the neutral and attacking zones before the puck has crossed the blue line. Play shall be restarted with a face-off in the neutral zone. Another offside is the goal area offside. A goal-area offside is called if an attacking player enters the goal-area before the puck is there.
The last important point is the icing (unauthorized long shot). Icing means that the puck is shot or deflected behind the opponent’s goal from the own half of the game. The game is continued with a bully in the neutral zone.
